Well, we did it. Building back up from the ground up. Redesigned a furnace to make a portable 2 in 1 furnace / glory hole combo in order to melt sand into glass and make artwork. After learning / figuring out how to weld, I started by welding castor wheels to the bottom of a ¼” sheet of steel. Next insulating fire brick, stacked level and cut to have a curved back for flame convection. Built wooden frames and cast high temp custom blocks for drain, flue (chimney), door, door opening, burner block and domed top called the crown. Designed and built the burner train system with a custom air gas mixer to deliver enough BTUs and correct flame chemistry to reach 2300, melting sand to glass. The front comes off and it has a free standing crucible pot to hold the glass, designed to be easily changed in order to melt different colors or even different types of glass rather than just clear. It is efficient with gas usage and has a quick heat up time - perfect for portability and an earth conscious green mindset. Who doesn’t want to bring a little reminder of the healing power of the ocean home with them?
One of the most beautiful and healing natural resources within our reach on the Florida Gulf Coast is our water. These cups channel the fluidity and essence of ocean water, and also function as vessels for the literal healing power of drinking water to hydrate our bodies.💧

I’ve been thinking about the relationship of glass to nature, as well as my own relationship to nature, a lot lately.
As a natural medium, glass is inextricably linked to not only the element of fire, but also to the element of water. All glass begins as sand, which is forged by the forces of water and time. Sand creates our beaches, which are constantly moving and changing with the waves, and often connect us to the water with a sense of wonder and the sublime. 🌅
And as glass breaks down, it is subjected to erosion and returns with time to sand once again.
This connection to the environment and sustainability is a huge part of why I love working with glass, and continually exploring new ways to recycle and reuse it in my process.

I love the sense of movement in these cups, the way they evoke the waves and remind me of why I chose to work in the medium of glass to begin with. 🌊

As an artist, I need supplies to make my work. As humans, we need resources to survive. But we only get one Mother Earth - so we need to take care of her. The key to living a sustainable life is easy: give the same amount that you take. One breath in, one breath out. Stay mindful and reduce what you use, reuse things whenever you can, and recycle what you can’t. Most of all, stay Grateful and Humble.

I am doing my best to live sustainably in all areas of my life, and glassmaking is no exception. That’s what helped inspire me to consider using recycled glass to create functional art. Working with recycled glass is not as straightforward as pulling soft glass from a furnace, but how could I overlook the potential of these gorgeous glass bottles? It’s just one way I can reduce my usage and prevent pounds of glass from being discarded, and my hope is that by creating work like this, I can encourage people to consider the nature of waste and perhaps look at their discards in a different light.

And then we all know The Lorax, Dr. Seuss’ cautionary tale about deforestation and our role in sustaining the planet. It inspired these Truffula Trees - a limited series to echo the finite nature of our forests and animal populations. These are my focus lately and just like the book, they won’t be around forever unless someone like you cares an awful lot…

Years ago after traveling to Italy for the first time, I envisioned creating a fountain like this. As it turned out, Trae had been wanting to make a fountain lately as well and the journey to breath this idea to life began. Problem after problem were thrown at us from figure failures to fixing water flow. After literally weeks of hard work and problem solving we ended up with a beautiful piece that functions brilliantly. Big shout out to @treezyglass for the hospitality and another to @stephoos @mixer.burnedoutbandit for living through the box building with laughs and smiles 😄

You’ve seen these before.. Made this one with the homie @treezyglass Designed by Pythagoras (you know, the Pythagorean theorem philosopher) There is a built in syphon so if the user gets greedy aka tries to overfill their cup, gravity will empty the entire contents out the bottom. It is good to be reminded not to be greedy 😉

Drunk bottles - something I did a while back figuring out how to #work with these #glass @bombaysapphire bottles in the #flame. Last summer, I completed arguably the most challenging piece of art I've ever created. The idea was to merge my clients 2 biggest passions - gardening and fancy cocktails. They had a ton of Bombay Sapphire bottles laying around. Since I'd been thinking a great deal about upcycling and sustainability, things seemed to line up.

After repeated trials and lots of shattered bottles, I figured out the right process and timing to work with the recycled glass bottles. After making all of the flower shapes and clear vines, I was in for an even bigger challenge - how to safely hang 100+ lbs of glass from a wall without losing aesthetics.

It took over 6 months from the idea to the completed installation and it is about 6 feet tall. Huge thanks to Sami Rosen, Luke Stone, Jake Smout & Matt Stern for helping bring this idea to life. I couldn't have done it without y'all. Thank you Bryan and Mike for commissioning it, being patient and encouraging every step of the way. Thank you James Vitale for letting me take over half the studio to work on assembly. Shout out to the Chrysler Museum Glass Studio and The Glass Spot for letting me rent studio time to try something a little out of the ordinary.

Passion is defined as "A strong and barely controllable emotion". It is a frequently used word and a trait people value a good amount, yet it is hard to define where it comes from, or what fuels it. Over the last couple months, I have had a lot more questions than answers. This has in turn made me question my art and my passion for creating it.

I spent last week assistant teaching with @shanefero at the Pittsburgh Glass Center and have never felt more passionate in my life. I am blessed to have been granted the opportunity to teach, learn and grow with so many amazing people. Dale Chihuly once told me that the key to life is all about the people you surround yourself with. I want to thank @pghglasscenter for the environment they created and all of the people who helped revitalize my passion for glass and breathe life back into my existence over the last week 🙏
